[FLASHBACK]

[Shot of tickets on a hotel nightstand. Walt throws open the curtains to reveal a view of the Sydney Harbor Bridge and skyline at night. He turns on the TV to watch Power Rangers with the volume way up which wakes Michael.]

MICHAEL: What are you doing?

WALT: Watching TV.

[Michael looks at the clock which says 5:23]

MICHAEL: Oh, man, do you see what time it is? Go back to sleep, Walt.

WALT: I always watch this show.

MICHAEL: Okay, then, can you at least turn it down a little.

[Walt turns it up.]

MICHAEL: I said turn it down, Walt.

WALT: Brian lets me watch it as loud as I want.

MICHAEL: I'm not Brian.

[Michael grabs the remote and turns off the TV. Walt gets Vincent and starts to walk out.]

WALT: Let's go, Vincent.

MICHAEL: Hey, where do you think you're going? [he follows Walt and Vincent into the hotel hallway] Hey, Walt.

WALT [yelling]: Get away from me! Leave me alone!

MICHAEL: Don't even - don't you think about it.

WALT: I said get away from me!

MICHAEL: Don't you walk away from me.

[Walt tries to get in the elevator. Michael grabs him and pulls him back to the room.]

MICHAEL: Look, I don't think so. Come on.

WALT: Get off of me.

MICHAEL: I don't like this either, but you're getting on that plane.

WALT: No, I'm not.

[A man opens a hotel door to see what the commotion is.]

HOTEL MAN: What's going on?

MICHAEL: It's okay, I'm his father.

WALT: No, you're not. You're not my father. You're not my father.

[Back at the beach. Michael and Walt are sleeping. Walt wakes up and goes over to a tree to pee. He sees Danielle approaching camp and follows her. She sees him and he runs.]

WALT: Dad! Dad wake up!

MICHAEL: What? What?

WALT: Somebody's here.

[Danielle continues moving into the beach camp, as people are waking up in alarm.]

MICHAEL: Hey, hey, hey, stop, slow, slow down. Stay right there. [to Sawyer] Who is that?

SAWYER: She's got to be the French chick.

SAYID: Calm down everyone. It's alright.

[Claire's baby cries. Danielle and Claire share a long look.]

SAYID: Danielle? Danielle? What are you doing here?

DANIELLE: The others are coming.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

DANIELLE: Our ship went aground on this island 16 years ago. There were 6 of us -- my team, 6. At that time I was already 7 months pregnant. I delivered the infant myself. The baby and I were together for only 1 week when I saw black smoke -- a pillar of black smoke 5 kilometers inland. That night they came -- they came and took her -- Alex. They took my baby. And now, they're coming again. They're coming for all of you.

JACK: Who's coming?

DANIELLE: The others. You have only 3 choices -- run, hide, or die.

[We see Jack and Locke walking on the beach.]

JACK: This is a woman who blew up her own shelter. Now she's talking about seeing black smoke and hearing whispers. I mean, she's not playing with a full deck.

LOCKE: That doesn't mean that what she's saying isn't true.

JACK: Well, if you want to focus on the "what if," be my guest, but I've got to stick with what's tangible. And right now, that's the launching of the raft.

[They arrive at the raft and Jack addresses Michael.]

JACK: How's it going?

MICHAEL: I wanted to get off today, but realistically, man, after we get the rudder done we've still got to lay the rails to get it down to the water.

JACK: Well, wouldn't it save time if we were laying the rails while you were finishing the rudder?

MICHAEL: Manpower shortage.

JACK: What do you need to lay the rails and move the boat?

MICHAEL: To get it all done today? Pretty much everybody.

JACK: Alright, give me 20 minutes.

[Shot of Locke watching Jack as he walks off.]

[We see Jack with a group of 4 male redshirts.]

JACK: Grab as many palm tree logs as you can find, the longer the better. Take them over to the raft area and Michael will know what to do with them.

[We see a group of people working on the raft.]

MICHAEL: You need to get them in there tight. You need leverage to get them on the rails. Good, that's good. Okay, that's good man. Just get it under there, okay? Okay. [to Locke] You alright?

LOCKE: Yep.

MICHAEL: Listen, on my count - I'll do 1-2-3 -- lift and then push, okay? Got it? Okay, c'mon. Once we get it down to the water line, we'll drop it and load it up. Alright. Ready. 1-2-3. Lift.

[They start moving the raft forward.]

MICHAEL: Push. Push, c'mon guys, push. Use the levers, use the levers. Good, good. 1-2-3, lift.

[The raft picks up momentum and starts moving on it's own. It "crashes" and Sawyer backs away. The mast breaks off.]

MICHAEL: I can't believe this [giving Sawyer a dirty look.] Can't believe it.

SAWYER: What are you looking at me for? It's not my fault.

MICHAEL: You missed a lever.

SAWYER: Because you couldn't keep the raft going straight.

WALT: Dad! Look.

[Everybody looks inland to see a pillar of black smoke on the horizon.]

[We see Jack, Locke, Sayid, and Hurley gathered around Danielle who's preparing her rifle.]

JACK: How many of them are there?

DANIELLE: I told you all I know.

SAYID: There has to be more you tell us. How did you know?

DANIELLE: You have a bigger problem. I can vanish into the jungle, but I'm just one person. You have 40 people. Where will you hide them?

[We see Danielle, Jack, Hurley, Locke and Sayid at the hatch.]

HURLEY: Dude. Whoa.

DANIELLE: What is this?

JACK: We were hoping you could tell us.

HURLEY: Uh, question -- how do we know we can all, like, fit in there?

LOCKE: No handle on the outside, means there must be another way in -- another entrance means space.

SAYID: This is a mistake. We don't know anything about these others. We're reacting with no information, no intelligence. This hatch might even be theirs. Black smoke on the horizon doesn't mean they're...

DANIELLE: It means they're coming.

JACK: Yeah, we got that.

LOCKE: You booby-trapped your shelter with explosives. You have any more?

DANIELLE: Dynamite, by the Black Rock, in the dark territory.

HURLEY: Well, that's 3 reasons to go right there.

DANIELLE: If we're to make it back by sunset we have to leave within the hour.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

[FLASHBACK]

[We see Jack at an airport bar. A woman, Ana-Lucia, enters and sits near him.]

ANA: Tequila and tonic with wedge of lemon. [to Jack] Why were you yelling -- the girl, the check-in counter? You were yelling at her.

JACK: I'm sorry, do I know you?

ANA: I'm on your flight. LA? So your dad died, huh?

JACK: I thought you didn't hear what I was yelling about.

ANA: I was being polite.

JACK: Yeah. My dad died.

ANA: How?

JACK: Heart attack.

ANA: Not a drinker, huh?

JACK: No, not really.

ANA: No ring because you're single or because you don't like wearing one?

JACK: You asking me if I'm married?

ANA: Are you married?

JACK: No. No, not any more. [to bartender] Can we get another tequila and tonic, please?

ANA: I didn't think you were listening.

JACK: So, what's your name?

ANA: Ana-Lucia.

JACK: So, tell me, Ana-Lucia, what are you doing drinking tequila and tonics at ten to noon?

ANA: I hate flying. And they stuck me all the way in the back of the plane where the wheels come down right under your damn feet. So where are you sitting?

JACK [checking his ticket]: 23B.

ANA: 42F. Wanna trade? [her cell phone rings] Hey, yeah. I'm in Sydney. Hold on. [to Jack] Sorry...

JACK: Jack.

ANA: Jack, I've got to talk. We'll have the next drink on the plane, okay?

JACK: 42F.

ANA: 42F, right. And Jack, the worst part's over.

[We see Jack at the beach with the redshirts and regulars.]

JACK: Look, I know you're all scared. And I know everybody has a lot of questions. All I can tell you right now is that we do have a plan. We've got to go into the jungle to get some supplies. We'll be back in a few hours. In the meantime, do everything you can to help Michael get that raft in the water. And after that, go to the caves. We'll be back as soon as we can. I promise.

ARZT: Hey, nice speech, plan's a little flawed, but hey, nobody's perfect.

JACK: What plan?

ARZT: Yeah, your plan. You're going to go into the jungle and get some dynamite and blow open a hatch and then you're going to hide everyone inside. You want to keep a secret don't tell the fat guy.

JACK: What do want Arzt?

ARZT: God knows how long that dynamite has been out there. And from what I can tell Madam Nutso doesn't seem too concerned with how to handle it. So, unless you want to blow up, I'm coming with you.

JACK: Okay. Grab some water bottles; we're leaving in half an hour.

[We see Michael and others working on the raft.]

MICHAEL: We can salvage the cable but we need new bamboo for the mast.

JIN [looking at the rails under the raft]: [Speaks in Korean.]

MICHAEL: We need to fix the rudder before we even start to think about that.

JIN: [Speaks in Korean.]

MICHAEL: Let's get this done first.

SAWYER: Need some help? [Michael and Jin ignore him and walk by] Hey, it wasn't my fault. So put me to work.

MICHAEL: No offense, we just work faster this way, okay.

JIN: [Speaks in Korean]

MICHAEL [to Jin]: Alright, alright. What do you think I'm doing over here?

[FLASHBACK]

[We see Sawyer in a police station in Australia.]

CALDERWOOD: You remember me? 3 nights ago? You were hauled in here thrashing and fighting. As you were being escorted by you kicked my desk. And you broke my mug.

SAWYER: Nice kids.

CALDERWOOD: Sadly for you, breaking my mug was not the most significant mistake you made that evening.

SAWYER: C'mon, Doctor, I got into a bar fight. Isn't that a badge of honor in this country?

CALDERWOOD: Do you know who you head-butted in that bar? You head-butted the Honorable Warren Truss, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry. One of the most important...

SAWYER: He head-butted me.

CALDERWOOD: We have witnesses he did no such thing.

SAWYER: Of course.

CALDERWOOD: You think this is funny, James? [he opens a file folder] James Ford, assault, wire fraud, identity theft, bank fraud, telemarketing fraud...

SAWYER: This going some place?

CALDERWOOD: You're a blight, a stain, a scavenger. You're a conman who prays on the weak and the needy. Tell me something, James, how do you live with yourself?

SAWYER: I do just fine.

CALDERWOOD: Do you? You're not even worth what it would cost us to incarcerate you which is why you're being deported. Your plane leaves this afternoon. And, James, [can't make out what he says] setting foot in Australia again.

SAWYER: Don't you worry, I ain't ever coming back here.

CALDERWOOD: Best not, mate.

[We see Sawyer chopping down a bamboo pole. Jack enters.]

JACK: Lumberjack.

SAWYER: Excuse me?

JACK: I never asked you what you did back in the real world, so I'm taking a wild guess -- lumberjack.

SAWYER: Something I can help you with, Doc, because I've got work to do.

JACK [handing Sawyer a gun]: I've got something for you. You're the only one on the raft who knows how to use one.

SAWYER: What do I need a gun for?

JACK: Just in case.

SAWYER: You think we're going to run out of food or water? Am I supposed to put the kid out of his misery?

JACK: Just in case.

SAWYER: What are you doing with the rest of them?

JACK: I'm giving them to Sayid.

SAWYER: Going into the jungle after the boom sticks, huh?

JACK: Yeah.

SAWYER: By the time you get back we'll be in the water. Guess this is pretty much goodbye, then.

JACK: Yeah, I guess it is. Good luck, Sawyer.

SAWYER [calling after Jack as he walks away]: Jack. About a week before we all got on the plane I got to talking to this man in a bar in Sydney. He was American, too. A doctor. I've been on some benders in my time, but this guy -- he was going for an all time record. It turns out this guy has a son -- his son's a doctor, too. They had some kind of big time falling out. The guy knew it was his fault even though his son was back in the States thinking the same damn thing. See, kids are like dogs, you knock them around enough they'll think they did something to deserve it. Anyway, there's a pay phone in this bar. And this guy, Christian, tells me he wishes he had the stones to pick up the phone, call his kid, tell him he's sorry, that he's a better doctor than he'll ever be -- he's proud, and he loves him. I had to take off, but something tells me he never got around to making that call. Small world, huh?

JACK: Yeah.

SAWYER: Good luck, Jack.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

[We see Kate and the Marshal at an airport official's office]

AUSTRALIAN OFFICIAL [opening the case]: You going to be armed?

MARSHAL: Yes, sir, ankle holster.

AUSTRALIAN OFFICIAL: You have to stow this in the crew luggage compartment in the front.

MARSHAL: No problemo.

AUSTRALIAN OFFICIAL: Why do you need 5 guns?

MARSHAL: Gee, you want to tell him, Kate? Why do I need 5 guns? [to Official] She's shy.

AUSTRALIAN OFFICIAL [pulling the toy plane out of the case]: What's this, then?

MARSHAL: That's a good story, you want to tell it, huh Kate? [he grabs the plane] This belonged to her childhood sweetheart who she got killed a couple of years ago when she was on the run. Poor guy -- a wife, a 2 year old kid. What was his name? Hmm? Well, somewhere along the way during the 3 years I was chasing her, she's starts calling me, at my house, and whining on about her mitigating circumstances. But what she's really doing is taunting me. So, I tell her that I've got whats-him-name's little toy airplane in a safe deposit box in New Mexico. So, she somehow figures out which bank, which safe deposit box. She seduces some idiot to rob the damn bank, and then she puts a bullet in her new friend because she's done using him. But she leaves all the money. She just takes the plane because that's the one thing in the whole world that Kate does care about. She has no attachments, and I think she's telling herself she needs it to atone for killing her boyfriend, whats-his-name. God, Kate, c'mon what was his name?

[Kate jumps up and pins the Marshal to the wall.]

KATE: Tom, you son-of-a-bitch.

[The Marshal elbows her in the face and she falls to the ground.]

MARSHAL: That is why I need 5 guns.

[We see Kate on the beach approaching Jack.]

KATE: So, you're heading out?

JACK: Yeah.

KATE: I was thinking that I might go with you -- for old time's sake? I want to help.

JACK: You won't be here for the raft launching.

KATE: Yeah, well, I'm not very good at goodbyes.

JACK: Grab your stuff.

[Shot of the black smoke. Charlie, near the raft, is collecting messages to put in a bottle.]

CHARLIE [to a Redshirt who puts a message in the bottle]: Thanks, man, I'll keep it safe. Hey, Locke, do you have a message? It's going on the raft. You know: Dear mom, Everything's fine. I'm on the island, unless, of course, the black smoke people turn up. Love, your name here. For when they get rescued -- they can contact your family.

LOCKE: Message in a bottle. That's sweet. [Locke pats Charlie's shoulder and walks away.]

CHARLIE [approaching Hurley]: You ready?

HURLEY: Here you go. Don't look at it. [Charlie looks at it] Dude! Do not look at it.

CHARLIE: Arzt, do you want paper?

ARZT: I gave at the office.

CHARLIE: Okay.

[Jack enters. Michael runs into Hurley as he's leaving the scene.]

MICHAEL: Careful.

HURLEY: Good luck, dude. [to Walt in the background] Keep dry, kiddo.

WALT: I will.

MICHAEL [to Jack]: Hey, good luck.

JACK [hugging Michael]: Same to you.

MICHAEL: See you soon.

JACK: Yes, you will. [to Walt] Hey, guy, look after your dad, okay.

WALT: I will.

JACK: Alright. [to Jin] Jin. [they shake hands] Good luck.

JIN: [Speaks in Korean.]

[We see Kate looking around for Sawyer.]

KATE [to Charlie]: Hey, have you seen Sawyer?

CHARLIE: No.

JACK: Alright, let's go.

CHARLIE [to Kate]: Take care, okay.

[We see the dynamite expedition leaves the beach and walk in a rocky-shore area. They stop to rest for a moment. Danielle takes her sweater off which reveals scratches on her arm.]

LOCKE: Where'd you get the scratches?

DANIELLE: A bush.

LOCKE: Mean bush.

DANIELLE: We've got to keep moving.

[They start walking again.]

HURLEY: Let me ask you something, Arnzt.

ARZT: Arzt.

HURLEY: Arnzt.

ARZT: No, not Arnzt, Arzt. A-R-Z-T, Arzt.

HURLEY: Sorry, man, the name's hard to pronounce.

ARZT: Yeah, well, I know a bunch of 9th graders who pronounce it just fine.

HURLEY: How about I just call you by your first name?

ARZT: How about you don't.

HURLEY: Why not? I remember it from the plane's manifest. I think Leslie's a bitchin' name.

ARZT: Arnzt is fine.

[They come to a piece of black fabric hanging from a branch.]

DANIELLE: Le Territoire Fonce.

JACK: The Dark Territory.

DANIELLE: The Black Rock is not far. This is where it all began -- where my team got infected -- where Montan lost his arm. We must move quickly.

ARZT: You know what? I'm going back.

JACK: Hey, I thought you wanted to help.

ARZT: Yeah, I wanted to help -- that was before Montan lost his fricking arm.

JACK: Well, what about the dynamite?

ARZT: Be very careful with it.

[We see Michael and Jin at the raft.]

MICHAEL: No, no, no. This one goes there. That one goes there.

JIN: Okay, okay.

SAWYER [entering with his bamboo pole]: Hey, Chief! Cut and measured to length -- perfect mast.

MICHAEL: Thanks.

SAWYER: Well, alright. Now, are we going to get off this rock or stand around talking about it?

[The dynamite expedition is in the jungle in the rain, now. They hear a strange sound.]

KATE: Did you hear that?

[Arzt comes running toward them. We hear the sound of the monster shortly after.]

ARZT: Run!

COMMERCIAL BREAK

[We see Arzt running. Kate, Jack, and Danielle run. Locke stops Hurley.]

ARZT: Run!

HURLEY: What are you...

LOCKE: Just be still.

[We hear the sounds of the monster and see Arzt running around. Danielle runs into a bamboo stand.]

DANIELLE [motioning to Kate and Jack]: Here, in here.

HURLEY: Dude, we've got to book.

LOCKE: Wait. It's headed the other way.

[The rain stops.]

DANIELLE: We're safe now.

KATE: What was that thing?

DANIELLE: It's a security system.

JACK: Security system? What does that mean?

DANIELLE: It's purpose it that of any security systems -- to protect something.

KATE: Protect what?

DANIELLE: The island.

[Hurley and Locke meet up with Danielle, Jack and Kate.]

HURLEY: Uh, where's Arnzt?

ARZT [entering]: It's Arzt, you idiot.

HURLEY: Dude, I thought you were dead.

ARZT: Can we just, please, go get the dynamite, please?

[We see Shannon at the beach folding Boone's clothes. Walt enters.]

WALT: Why are you folding the clothes?

SHANNON: Because I'm anal. Is there something you want?

WALT: I think you should take Vincent.

SHANNON: Are you serious?

WALT: He'll take care of you.

SHANNON: What makes you think I need a dog to take care of me?

WALT: Vincent took care of me when my mom died and nobody would talk to me. They pretended like nothing happened. So I had to talk to Vincent. He's a good listener. You could talk to him about Boone if you want.

SHANNON: Alright, but only until you get us rescued, okay.

[We see Shannon doing word search puzzles at the airport.]

AIRPORT ANNOUNCEMENT [in background]: Flight 338 to Fiji will be delayed. Please check the board for flight details.

[Sayid comes partially into frame and sets his bag down by Shannon.]

SAYID: Excuse me, would you mind watching my bag for a moment? I'll be right back.

SHANNON: Sure, whatever.

SAYID: Thank you.

BOONE [entering]: I couldn't get us into first class.

SHANNON: Why not?

BOONE: Um, maybe you shouldn't have yelled at the gate agent.

SHANNON: What? You're on his side, now?

BOONE: One day you're going to appreciate everything I do for you.

SHANNON: Yeah, I can't wait for that day.

[We see Shannon and Boone on an escalator.]

SHANNON: You can try again with the gate agent.

BOONE: Would you let it go?

SHANNON: Excuse me for not being pathetic enough to not want to sit next to some crying baby for the next 15 hours.

BOONE: Oh god, you can be a bitch.

SHANNON: Oh, you want to play? I will get you thrown off this flight.

BOONE: Yeah, how are you going to do that?

SHANNON: I can do whatever I want. I could tell them...

BOONE: Tell them what? Who's going to believe you? You're not even capable of...

SHANNON: You have no idea what I'm capable of.

[Shannon approaches an airport cop.]

SHANNON: Excuse me, sir?

AIRPORT COP: Yes, ma'am.

SHANNON: Hi, um, some Arab guy just left his bags in the chairs downstairs and then just walked away.

AIRPORT COP: Can you describe him, please?

SHANNON: Um, Arab. He went towards the shops. [to Boone] How's that?

[At the raft.]

SAYID: I salvaged a few things for you from the Beechcraft. This is the plane's radar emitter. It needs to be mounted on the mast or the top of the cabin.

SAWYER: I'll do it.

SAYID: Michael, to conserve power, turn it on only once every hour or so. It will show you any ships within the horizon line, approximately 25 miles -- the same with the radio transmitter. [Sayid hands Michael a flare gun] This was in the plane's toolbox. There's only one flare. Choose wisely when you use it.

[We see the dynamite expedition.]

LOCKE: Why are we stopping?

DANIELLE: Because we're here. This is the Black Rock.

[Reveal shows an old ship.]

COMMERCIAL BREAK

[FLASHBACK]

[We see Sun carrying a tray back to the table where Jin is waiting at the airport.]

JIN [subtitled]: Why did it take so long?

SUN [subtitled]: I'm really hungry now. There were a lot of people in line. There really wasn't much to choose from, so I just got some simple things for us. [Sun puts a napkin on Jin's lap] Here.

GINA [at the next table]: If you ever catch me doing anything like that for you, shoot me.

JEFF: Don't knock it. Their divorce rate's 20 times lower than ours.

[Sun overhears them, then knocks over a drink onto Jin. She tries to help and Jin apparently asks where the bathroom is. Sun points, and Jin exits.]

GINA: My god, it's Memoirs of a Geisha come to life.

JEFF: Volume.

GINA: Relax, they don't speak English.

[We see Sun approach Jin at the raft. When Jin sees her he starts to walk away.]

SUN [subtitled, handing Jin some papers]: This is for you.

JIN [reading the papers]: Star. . . star board.

SUN: Starboard. [Subtitled]: It's a list of simple English words spelled out phonetically -- I thought this would help you so I made it for you.

JIN [subtitled]: I'm sorry.

SUN [subtitled]: I am too. You don't have to go.

JIN [subtitled]: No, don't you understand, Sun. I'm in this place because I'm being punished. I made you suffer. You don't deserve any of this.

SUN: Jin...

JIN [subtitled]: I have to go because I'm going to save you. Stay with Jack. He'll keep you safe.

SUN [subtitled]: Who will keep you safe?

[They hug and cry.]

SUN [subtitled]: I love you.

JIN [subtitled]: I'm so sorry.

SUN [subtitled]: It's okay.

[They kiss.]

[We see Shannon give Charlie a message for the bottle. Everyone is gathering around to see off the raft. Hugs goodbye. Charlie gives the bottle to Sawyer. They push the raft out into the water.]

MICHAEL: Go, go, go.

WALT: Bye Vincent, bye Vincent.

[The raft sets sail. People wave and whoop. Vincent swims after Walt.]

WALT: Stay, Vincent. Go back, Vincent. Vincent, go back, go back.

[Vincent turns around and Shannon gets him. Sawyer hoists the sail.]

MICHAEL [to Walt]: What'd I say?

WALT: We did it!

[More waving and whooping. Jin and Sun share a long goodbye look. Long shot of the boat moving out toward sea.]

[Shot of the pillar of black smoke.]

[Opening shot of the baby's eye. He's crying and a frustrated Claire is shushing him. Charlie runs over.]

CHARLIE: Claire, everybody's leaving.

CLAIRE: Okay, well, I can't go anywhere, alright. I've got the baby, and I'm so tired, I can't carry him -- now he's wet, there's sand everywhere, I don't have anymore nappies.

CHARLIE [reaching for the baby]: Why don't you let me help.

CLAIRE [brushing his hands away and picking up the baby]: No, nobody ever taught me how to do this, okay?

CHARLIE: Claire, it's going to be okay.

CLAIRE: Oh, why do people keep telling me that? Are they the ones with the baby?

[We see Sayid talking to a group of redshirts.]

SAYID: We've got to get there before sundown. Once you reach the caves, stay there. The rest of us will be right behind you.

[The group disperses and Charlie enters.]

CHARLIE: Sayid. I need a gun. Look, I know Jack gave them to you. I want one right now. I have to protect Claire.

SAYID: Rousseau said the others wouldn't be here until nightfall.

CHARLIE: Rousseau is certifiable. What if they show up before then and...

SAYID: The last time you handled a sidearm...

CHARLIE: I killed a murderer. I did us all a favor.

SAYID: Charlie, you're emotionally involved. Let me handle the weapons.

CHARLIE: But you're not here all the time. You can't protect Claire. Look, I need a gun...

SAYID: If you really want to help Claire, get her packed, carry her child to the caves. That's what she needs.

[At the Black Rock.]

HURLEY: How exactly does something like this happen?

DANIELLE: Are you on the same island as I am?

HURLEY: I guess that explains it.

[Jack, Locke, Kate and Hurley move toward the ship. Arzt stays where he is and Danielle starts walking off in the other direction.]

ARZT: Hold on, wait, hold on. What are we a couple miles inland? [to Danielle] A tsunami probably swept it here, huh, right?

JACK [seeing Danielle's departure]: Hey, hey where are you going?

DANIELLE: Explosives are in the hold of the ship.

JACK: Rousseau, wait.

DANIELLE: I did what you asked. You need dynamite, you don't need me. [she exits]

LOCKE: Let her go, Jack.

JACK: Who's going to lead us back?

LOCKE: I'll lead us back.

JACK: Damn it. You heard her -- the explosives are in the hold. Let's go.

ARZT: Whoa, whoa, hold on. I came here to tell you how to handle dynamite, not explore some ghost ship...

JACK: Alright, just stay out here.

HURLEY: Uh, I'm going to stay out here and hang with Arnzt.

[Jack, Locke and Kate enter the ship. Jack steps on a skeleton. We see skeletons chained up.]

LOCKE: Slaves. [he sees a giant drill bit] This ship must have been in route to a mining colony -- probably set off from the eastern coast of Africa -- Mozambique.

[They look around the ship seeing more chains and manacles. Kate spots the explosives.]

KATE: Jack, John, over here.

[Arzt and Hurley outside.]

ARZT: And then my 3rd wife, she says, get this, she says, "I didn't sign up for this." Now you tell me, what the hell is that even supposed to mean? [Hurley doesn't respond] What, am I boring you?

HURLEY: Huh?

ARZT: You know what? I'm sorry, I'm sorry that I'm not cool enough to be part of your merry little band of adventurers.

HURLEY: What?

ARZT: I know a clique when I see it. I teach high school, pal-y. You know, you people think you're the only ones on this island doing anything of value. I've got news for you. There were 40 other survivors of this plane crash. And we are all people, too.

HURLEY: O-kay.

[Kate finds a pick axe to open the box of dynamite.]

KATE: You know what? We could probably get it open if I just...

JACK: No, no, no, we should take it outside.

KATE: Why? We don't even know if it's...

JACK: You're not prying open a crate that says explosives on the side with a pick axe, Kate.

LOCKE: I agree with Jack -- take it outside, open it there.

KATE [reaching to grab an end of the crate]: Okay.

JACK: I got it. You mind showing us the way?

[Arzt and Hurley outside.]

ARZT: And it's not just the teenagers, either. You know, the gym teachers -- you think they let me sit with them in the cafeteria? No. They do not.

HURLEY: Dude, this is all in your head.

ARZT: Really? Then you explain to me why Kate gets the best pieces of wreckage to build her shelter? And the Korean guy? Does he catch fish for everybody on the island? No, he does not. He doesn't. And some of us have actually lost weight while we were here. Now, would mind telling me where you're hiding the carbs because I can't figure...

[Arzt stops talking upon seeing Jack and Locke exiting the ship with the crate of dynamite.]

ARZT: What the hell are you people doing? Wait, wait, stop, stop, right where you are. Alright, I want you to put that down carefully. Put it down carefully. Gently, gently. Damn it, carefully, gently. Alright, now get out of there. Come away from there. C'mon, get out. Move away from it.

JACK: What the hell are you doing?

ARZT: Shhh. Be quiet. Do any of you have any idea what happens to dynamite in 90+ degree heat, huh? [Arzt pries open the crate with a pocket knife] No? Any of you? It sweats nitroglycerin. [Jack starts moving toward him] Whoa, hey what you doing? Did I ask you to come closer? [he removes a stick of dynamite from the crate] Dynamite is nitroglycerin stabilized by clay. Nitroglycerin is the most dangerous and unstable explosive known to man. Hey, Kate give me your shirt. Now, princess, give me your shirt. I need to wrap the dynamite. Just throw it to me, right here. Be careful, c'mon, hurry up. [she gives him her shirt] Good, now back up, back up. Just back up. Get out of my way. Any of you ever hear about the guy who invented nitroglycerin? Probably not -- because he blew his freaking face off. [Arzt wets Kate's shirt and wraps it around the dynamite] His lab assistant came into the room, saw that his mentor detonated, and he said, "Huh, I guess this stuff does work." Alright, we're not going to take any more of this stuff than we need because nitroglycerin is extremely temperamental so we...

[The dynamite explodes and bits and pieces of Arzt and leaves rain down on the others who've fallen.]

HURLEY: Dude.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

[FLASHBACK]

[We see Sun and Jin at the Sydney airport.]

SUN [subtitled, opening a sandwich box]: Do you want it cut in half? [she hands it to Jin] Here you go. [she spills coffee on him] Oh, I'm so sorry! Are you alright?

JIN [subtitled]: I'm alright, I'm fine. Where's the restroom?

SUN [subtitled]: It's over there.

[We see Sayid walking with airport security.]

AIRPORT COP: Sorry for the inconvenience.

SAYID: I'm sure you are.

AIRPORT COP: Sir, your bag was unattended.

SAYID: Am I free to go?

AIRPORT COP: Yes, sir.

SAYID: have a plane to catch.

[We see Jin in the restroom cleaning up. A man in a Hawaiian shirt is there washing his hands.]

HAWAIIAN SHIRT: Hey, could you hand me a paper towel there, bud? A paper towel -- this one's broken.

[Jin signals that he doesn't speak English.]

HAWAIIAN SHIRT: Oh, oh, you don't speak English. Sorry.

[Hawaiian Shirt goes to the next paper towel dispenser.]

HAWAIIAN SHIRT [subtitled]: Here's a paper towel.

JIN [subtitled]: What?

HAWAIIAN SHIRT [subtitled]: I work for Mr. Paik. Your father-in-law, and employer.

JIN [subtitled]: You've been following me?

HAWAIIAN SHIRT [subtitled]: Yes. I know you're planning to run away. But you're going to take that watch to Mr. Paik's friend in California. You do anything else -- anything -- you will lose her. You are not free. You never have been, and you never will be.

[We see Jin apparently enjoying being on the raft.]

WALT: Dad, look!

[Shot of part of the island.]

MICHAEL: How does a place this big never get discovered?

SAWYER: Don't know, but you could build yourself one hell of a beach resort right over there.

MICHAEL: Yeah, you build your resort. I'm happy to say goodbye to this place forever.

WALT: What about everybody else? Think they'll be okay?

[We hear Sawyer singing Redemption Song in the background.]

MICHAEL: I hope so, buddy. At least until we can get them some help.

SAWYER [singing]: Redemption song is all I'll ever have...

MICHAEL: You singing Bob Marley?

SAWYER: No. Why, you like Bob Marley?

MICHAEL: Man, who doesn't like Bob Marley?

[We Sun at the beach looking out to sea, and at her wedding ring. Shannon is struggling with her luggage and Vincent.]

SHANNON: Damn it!

SAYID: Do you really need all that?

SHANNON: Yeah, I do.

SAYID: Why do you have to bring so much?

SHANNON: Don't you have a hike to lead?

[She drops her suitcase and Sayid finds she has some of Boone's clothes. Shannon grabs them.]

SHANNON: I'm fine.

SAYID: These belong to your brother.

SHANNON: I need these things. I can't just leave them. What are we doing? Hiding? As if they won't find us. It's just -- it's too much. It's too much.

SAYID [stroking her hair]: It won't be too much if I carry it for you. Now come on, I have a hike to lead.

[We see Hurley sitting on a log by the Black Rock. Kate enters.]

KATE: You okay?

HURLEY: That was messed up.

KATE: Yeah.

HURLEY: He just -- exploded in front of us. He was just trying to help. This is because I came.

KATE: What?

HURLEY: I'm kind of bad luck.

KATE: Hey, it was an accident.

HURLEY: An accident, yeah.

[We see Jack wetting a shirt to wrap the dynamite in. Locke slowly reaches for a stick of dynamite.]

JACK: Locke, we should think about this.

LOCKE: Alright.

JACK: Maybe this isn't the best way.

LOCKE: It's the only way, Jack.

[Locke reaches again for a stick of dynamite.]

JACK: How many do we need to blow the hatch?

LOCKE [pulling a roll of fuse out of the crate]: 2 should take care of the hinge, 3 to be safe.

JACK: Safe?

LOCKE: I'm removing the driest pieces to minimize our risk transporting it. [he reaches for another stick] You ever play Operation?

JACK: Sure. Don't touch the sides.

LOCKE: I always got nailed on the funny bone. [he picks up a stick] Bzzzt!

JACK [flinching]: You like to play games, John?

LOCKE: Absolutely.

[Shot of the baby. We see Claire preparing to leave. Charlie enters with something over his shoulder.]

CHARLIE: Okay, I know we're in a rush to escape to the caves, so I solved the turniphead transport issue. This is just a blanket from the plane. And then there's a piece of wood here that goes through this bamboo. [he demonstrates how it works] Here you go. It's a Bjorn.

CLAIRE: Bjorn?

CHARLIE: Bjorn -- it's Dutch for baby carrier.

CLAIRE: Thanks.

CHARLIE: That's okay.

CLAIRE [kissing his cheek]: Thank you.

CHARLIE: Oh, that's okay.

CLAIRE: I'll just put him in there.

CHARLIE: It's really...

DANIELLE [entering]: Sayid! Where is he?

CHARLIE: Rousseau! What?

DANIELLE: Sayid? Where is he?

CHARLIE: He already left.

DANIELLE: I need him now.

CHARLIE: Jack and Kate...

DANIELLE: There's no time. Where is Sayid?

CHARLIE: Alright, calm down, okay. I'll get him for you. [to Claire] Stay here, alright.

CLAIRE: Okay.

CHARLIE [exiting]: Sayid! Sayid!

CLAIRE: What happened out there?

DANIELLE [mesmerized by the baby]: What is his name? The child. What is his name?

CLAIRE: Oh, I haven't named him yet.

DANIELLE: May I hold him?

CLAIRE: Why do you need Sayid?

DANIELLE: You don't want me to hold him.

CLAIRE: No, I just fed him. I don't think it's a good idea, okay?

DANIELLE: Please.

[Claire notices the scratches on Danielle's arm. We see a brief FLASHBACK of Claire struggling with Danielle, scratching her.]

CLAIRE: Why did I do that? Why did I scratch you?

COMMERCIAL BREAK

[We see Charlie in a hotel room searching for his heroin. A girl is lying in the bed.]

LILY: What's going on?

CHARLIE: My flight, my flight to LA leaves in a couple of hours so I've got to get moving, you know. [he finds the heroin in the bathroom]

LILY: You want to do one more bump for the road?

CHARLIE [coming out of the bathroom]: It's all gone. We did it all last night. I have some champagne.

LILY [slight panicked]: You've got to have some left.

CHARLIE: Mm-mm. No. It's done. I'll look you up next time I'm in Sydney, okay. I'll send you an autographed copy of my CD and then you can listen to it whenever you want.

LILY: I don't want your piece of crap CD from your piece of crap band.

CHARLIE: Last night in the bar you said you were a fan.

LILY Fine. I'm a huge fan. Drivethru is the best damned band ever. Now just give me a bump because I know you've got some.

CHARLIE: Shaft. Driveshaft. [Charlie pulls the heroin out of his pocket when Lily goes into the bathroom.]

LILY [coming out of the bathroom]: What's that in your hand?

CHARLIE: Nothing.

LILY: Holding out on me?

CHARLIE: Holding out on you? No, I'm not holding out...

LILY [cornering him]: Give it to me.

CHARLIE: Give you what? I'm not holding anything.

LILY: Give it to me.

CHARLIE: I've got nothing in my hand!

LILY: Give it to me.

[Lily knees him in the groin. They struggle.]

LILY: Get up.

CHARLIE: Get off.

LILY: Get up. Let it go. Let it go.

CHARLIE: What are you, crazy?

LILY: Let it go.

CHARLIE: Get off.

[She starts hitting him and he throws her off.]

CHARLIE: Get off me.

LILY [smacking him some more]: You're pathetic. You're pathetic.

[She grabs the champagne and leaves Charlie lying on the floor clutching the heroin.]

[We see Charlie running through the jungle looking for Sayid.]

CHARLIE [catching up]: Sayid! Sayid, Rousseau's on the beach. She needs you.

SAYID: Rousseau? What for?

CHARLIE: I don't know.

[They hear a scream and start running. When the enter the beach area Sun is kneeling next to Claire's body, yelling. Sayid, Shannon, Charlie, and a redshirt run to the scene.]

SUN: Help! Someone! Help!

CHARLIE: My god!

SAYID: What happened?

SUN [showing them a bloody rag]: Her head.

CLAIRE: Where's my baby?

[Charlie looks for the baby who is missing.]

CHARLIE: Oh, my god.

CLAIRE: Is he alright?

SAYID: Rousseau, was she alone?

CLAIRE: Did she take my baby? Did she take my baby?!

SAYID: Claire, which way did she go?

CLAIRE: I don't know! She took my baby!

CHARLIE [punching Sayid]: It's your fault! You brought her into the camp. If you had just given me a gun.

[Charlie makes to take another jab at Sayid. Sayid grabs Charlie's throat.]

SAYID: Do not hit me again. You want to waste time assigning blame? There's plenty to go around. She has a head start. If we leave now we can catch her.

CHARLIE: How are we going to do that?

SAYID: Because I know where she's going.

CLAIRE [hysterical]: I want my baby!

[At the Black Rock.]

JACK: We can carry all the sticks in my pack. The more insulation we stuff in the better.

LOCKE: I think we should split them up.

JACK: What?

LOCKE: It's not smart to keep it all together. So, we split them up. If we need 3 sticks to blow the hinge then we should bring 6 -- 3 and 3 -- failsafe, in case one of us...

JACK: You and me, then.

KATE: No, I'm taking one.

JACK: It's not going to happen, no.

KATE: This is why I came.

JACK: Then, you wasted a trip.

KATE: I need to do this.

JACK: Kate, no one owes anyone anything.

KATE: I'm carrying one.

JACK: We're done here.

KATE: This is not your decision.

JACK: Kate, yes it is.

LOCKE: We'll draw straws. They're coming. We don't have time to argue about who gets to risk their life, so -- we'll let fate decide.

KATE: Works for me.

JACK [to Hurley]: What about you? You want to carry some dynamite, too? [Hurley stares] What?

HURLEY: You got some Arnzt on you.

LOCKE [holding sticks to draw]: Short sticks carry the packs. [Kate and Locke draw the short sticks] Looks like it's me and you, Kate.

[At the raft. Walt, Michael and Jin are at the radar screen.]

WALT: So, what's this stuff even do?

MICHAEL: Well, the transmitter sends out an SOS in case someone's listening. And if there's anything out there, we'll see it on this radar screen here.

[Jin goes to the radar emitter.]

MICHAEL: Here we go. C'mon, someone find us.

[Walt sees Sawyer reading the messages from the bottle.]

WALT: Those are the messages everybody wrote.

SAWYER: Sure are.

WALT: They're private.

SAWYER: Yep. I, for one, never knew how much Tracy missed her hubby and 2 kids back in Fresno. Yet she's sleeping next to good old Scott to keep her warm at night.

WALT: That's Steve. Scott's dead.

SAWYER: Whatever. It's alright, Kazoo, we've got to keep ourselves entertained. Who the hell is Hugo and how's he got a 160 million dollars to leave to his mom.

WALT: How would you like it if I read yours?

SAWYER: You can't read mine because I didn't write one.

WALT: Why not?

SAWYER: Because the only one I ever wrote is to the man I'm going to kill.

WALT: Why you going to kill him?

SAWYER: Because I need to.

WALT: Why?

SAWYER: Because!

[Shot of the black smoke. We see Sayid and Charlie running toward it.]

CHARLIE: Are you bloody joking? Why would she go for the black smoke? Isn't that where the others are supposed to be?

SAYID: The others are precisely why she would go there. Rousseau told us she saw black smoke the day her own child was taken 16 years ago. [Sayid stops at the gun case] They took something from her, and now she believes she has something that they want.

CHARLIE: She's making a trade?

SAYID: I believe she is, yes.

CHARLIE: That's insane. She's insane.

SAYID: Don't try to apply reason to her actions. She's a mother who lost her child, just like Claire. [Sayid hands Charlie a gun] This isn't about revenge. Don't make it personal.

[Claire and Sun enter.]

CLAIRE: I'm coming with you.

SAYID: That's not a good idea, Claire.

CLAIRE: This is my baby, okay. I let her take him.

CHARLIE: Hey, hey.

CLAIRE [hitting Charlie]: Don't tell me what to do, okay!

CHARLIE: Calm down!

CLAIRE: I am going to come with you. This is my fault and I'm coming and you can't stop me!

CHARLIE: It's alright, Claire.

CLAIRE [spent]: Get him back, Charlie. Get Aaron back.

CHARLIE: Aaron?

CLAIRE: Please, get him back.

CHARLIE: Claire, I will get him back. Promise.

[Shot of the black smoke.]

COMMERCIAL BREAK

[FLASHBACK]

[We see Walt and Michael at Sydney airport. Walt playing GBA.]

MICHAEL: Hey, you want something to eat? [Walt doesn't respond] I guess that's a no, then. If you're worried about Vincent, he going to be okay, man. Dogs fly in the luggage compartment all the time. Alright, I've got to call work, right over there. Don't go anywhere, okay.

[We see Michael at a pay phone.]

MICHAEL: No, I live in a studio apartment. I've got to be out the door in the morning for work at 5am. Who's going to watch him? How's he going to get to school? What's he going to do after school? I can't do this, ma. You know, I was -- listen, I was thinking -- I was thinking maybe you could take him. Look, ma, if it's a question of money. [Locke goes by in his wheelchair] What am I supposed to do with him? He's not supposed to be mine. That was never part of the plan. Yeah, I -- thanks a lot. [he hangs up and turns around to discover Walt standing there] Hey, man, I was, uh...

WALT: I need new batteries.

[We see Michael and Walt at the raft.]

MICHAEL [steering]: Hey, want to try?

WALT: What?

MICHAEL: C'mon, come here. You drive for awhile.

WALT: Really?

MICHAEL: Absolutely. Okay now, look, the most important part of this boat is the rudder. It's how you steer. You turn it gradually -- nothing sharp, okay. Push it this way.

WALT: Where are we going?

MICHAEL: Look, [holding a compass] so, we're going approximately North by Northeast. So, hopefully that puts us into a shipping lane, or we hit some land.

WALT: What do I aim for?

MICHAEL: See that cloud on the horizon right there?

WALT: Yeah.

MICHAEL: You aim for that.

WALT: Yep.

MICHAEL: Okay.

WALT: Got it. How come you and my mom didn't stay together?

MICHAEL: We tried. It just didn't work out, so -- our lives, our interests -- we just went in different directions.

WALT: How come I never saw you?

MICHAEL: Because your Mom didn't want me to. She did what she thought was best for you.

WALT: She was wrong.

[Michael smiles. The boat hits something and the rudder comes loose.]

JIN: Rudder.

MICHAEL: We hit a log. We lost the rudder.

JIN: Rudder.

MICHAEL: We're losing it. It's sinking.

[Sawyer takes off his shoes and shirt.]

MICHAEL: Stop the boat. Stop the boat. Just pull the sail down. Right.

[Sawyer jumps in and swims for the rudder.]

WALT: Dad!

MICHAEL: Sawyer! Sawyer! [to Jin] Give me the rope.

JIN [throwing the rope to Michael]: Rope.

MICHAEL: Sawyer!

SAWYER [at the rudder]: It's sinking.

[Michael throws the rope.]

SAWYER: I can't reach it.

[Michael throws the rope again.]

MICHAEL: Got it?

JIN: [Speaks in Korean.]

MICHAEL: Tie it around the rudder, we'll pull you in.

[They pull Sawyer and the rudder in.]

MICHAEL [pulling Sawyer up]: C'mon, buddy. You just saved our asses, buddy.

[Michael picks up Sawyer's gun and wraps his shirt around it.]

MICHAEL [a bit angry]: Here's your shirt. You should put that back on before you burn.

[We see Jack carefully helping Kate put on her backpack.]

KATE: Sorry.

JACK: Yeah, well, luck of the draw.

LOCKE: The sun sets in 90 minutes, give or take. If we want to get back to the hatch we're going to have to hustle.

JACK: Okay, this is how we do this. I'll lead -- Kate, you're right behind me, then Hurley. John, you bring up the rear. If you start to see me heading the wrong way...

LOCKE: We should stagger our formation -- keep a safe distance from each other.

JACK: Alright, we stagger. If anyone hears anything or sees anything...

HURLEY: Like the security system that eats people?

JACK: Yeah, like that. You 2, you take your packs off, you put them down and you run. You got it?

KATE: Got it.

LOCKE: Yes, sir.

JACK: Okay, let's do this.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

[We see Sun, Claire, Shannon and redshirts arrive at the caves.]

SUN [to Shannon]: He died bravely.

SHANNON: What?

SUN: Your brother.

SHANNON: Yeah. Thanks.

SUN: Do you think all this -- all that we've through -- do you think we're being punished?

SHANNON: Punished for what?

SUN: Things we did before -- the secrets we kept, the lies we told.

SHANNON: Who do you think is punishing us?

SUN: Fate.

CLAIRE: No one's punishing us. There's no such thing as fate.

[We see Sayid and Charlie running/climbing along rocky shore.]

SAYID: Are you okay?

CHARLIE: I'm fine, keep going.

SAYID: We're losing the light. Try to keep up.

CHARLIE: Coming. [Sayid gets too far ahead] Sayid! Sayid! Sayid!

SAYID: Over here.

CHARLIE: Sayid.

SAYID: You can barely breathe; we're going to rest.

CHARLIE: Rest? She's out there right now...

SAYID: In another mile you're going to collapse. We're going to take a break.

[They stop at the Nigerian plane site.]

CHARLIE: Is this where Boone fell?

SAYID: The plane was up there.

CHARLIE: Where did it come from?

SAYID: Based on the maps inside -- Nigeria.

CHARLIE: Anyone on board?

SAYID: Two men dressed as priests.

CHARLIE: Priests?

SAYID: Drug runners in disguise. [he picks up a Mary statue] The plane was loaded with heroin. [he picks up his pack to go] Alright, now we go.

[We see Jack, Kate, Locke and Hurley walking through the jungle.]

HURLEY: So, dude? What do you think is inside of that hatch thing?

LOCKE: What do you think is inside it?

HURLEY: Stacks of TV dinners from the 50's, or something. And TVs, and cable, some cell phones, clean socks, soap, Twinkies -- you know, for dessert, after the TV dinners. Twinkies keep for, like, 8000 years, man.

LOCKE [laughing]: I like Twinkies, too.

HURLEY: C'mon, really, what do you think is inside?

LOCKE: Hope. I think hope is inside.

[They continue walking. A large bird calls and flies away, scaring everyone.]

HURLEY: Whoever named this place Dark Territory? Genius.

[We hear a chittering sound. Jack and Kate see a black "shadow" slide by a short distance to their right. Jack looks at Kate.]

KATE: Yeah, I saw it. We've got to get out of here.

[Jack, Kate, and Hurley move off quickly. Locke stays to stare. We hear some animal cries, then the "footsteps," and sounds of the monster. Jack takes his pack off and runs with Kate and Hurley. Locke takes his pack off and tries to get a closer look. Jack sees Locke going toward the monster.]

JACK: Locke! What are you doing?

[Jack runs after Locke. Locke continues toward the monster.]

JACK: Locke!

[The sounds of the monster die down, and Locke stands still. There is a sudden "footstep" right next to Locke and he falls. Locke's expression changes from wonder to terror as he "sees" the monster loom above him.]

[Locke scrambles to get away from the monster. Jack runs after him.]

JACK: Locke!

[We see Kate and Hurley running. Kate turns around.]

KATE: Jack! Jack!

[Kate runs after Jack. We hear a ratcheting sound, and Locke is captured by a tedril of the monster by the ankle and dragged. Jack runs and grabs hold of Locke barely keeping him from being dragged into a hole in the ground. Kate enters.]

KATE: Oh, god.

JACK: I need the dynamite. [Kate takes her pack off] No, no, it's in my pack. Just go get it. Hurry, go. John, John.

LOCKE: Let me go. Just let me go. I'll be alright. [Locke tries to let go]

JACK: No.

LOCKE: Let me go. I'll be alright.

KATE [entering]: Hang on. I've got it.

JACK: Careful unwrapping it. Now throw it in.

LOCKE: No!

KATE: It'll blow us up.

JACK: Just hurry, I can't hold him.

LOCKE: Don't do this, Kate.

JACK: Throw it in now, Kate!

[She throws the dynamite in. We hear the explosion and see a cloud of black come up behind Locke, gather together, and "exit." Jack and Kate pull Locke up.]

[Shot of Jin's watch on a pad of paper at the raft. Michael picks up the paper.]

MICHAEL [to Jin]: Hey, your wife made this for you?

JIN: Sun.

MICHAEL: She sounded it out, huh -- so you could learn English?

JIN: Yes.

MICHAEL: Yeah, I wish she had made one for me. So what words are in here? English words -- what can you say?

JIN: Ah, starboard, aft, port, sail, eat.

MICHAEL [laughing]: She did you well. I hope you know how lucky are, man. [Jin indicates that the rudder is fixed] Back in business? Alrighty. [Michael grabs the watch to give it back to Jin] Oh, hey, it's yours.

JIN [offering the watch to Michael]: You.

MICHAEL: What?

JIN [putting the watch in Michael's hand]: You.

MICHAEL: Um, thank you. Thanks.

[We see Sun approach Claire at the caves.]

SUN: I made you some tea.

CLAIRE [not accepting it]: I'm fine. [then she takes the tea] Thanks.

SUN: Aaron is a beautiful name. What does it mean?

CLAIRE: I don't know what Aaron means.

SUN: They will bring him back.

CLAIRE: Don't say that.

SUN: They will.

CLAIRE: How do you know that?

SUN: Because he said he would. Charlie will bring your baby back.

[We see Charlie and Sayid running through the jungle. They come across a blanket on the ground.]

CHARLIE: There!

SAYID: Charlie, wait.

[Charlie picks up what he thinks is the baby, but it's a booby-trap. A net full of rocks rains down on Charlie.]

SAYID: Charlie! Let me see. [Charlie has a gash above his eye]

CHARLIE: It's bleeding.

SAYID: We need to put pressure on it.

CHARLIE: Okay. Ow.

SAYID [handing Charlie a towel]: There.

CHARLIE: Ow. Animal, what is she...

SAYID: Keep the pressure on, like this.

CHARLIE: Ow. Ow. Ow.

SAYID: She's been here for 16 years. She's learned how to set traps quickly. Okay, let's have a look. It's too deep. It's bleeding too much. You're going to have to go back.

CHARLIE: I'm not going back. You're going to have to fix it.

SAYID: I'm not a doctor.

CHARLIE: You're a soldier. What do people do when you get wounded? I'm not going back without that baby, Sayid.

SAYID: Don't move. [Sayid gets a bullet and opens it]

CHARLIE: Gunpowder?

SAYID: Remove the towel and tilt your head back. Move the towel.

[Sayid pours the gunpowder onto the wound.]

CHARLIE: This is because I hit you, isn't it?

SAYID [getting a match]: This is not going to be pleasant. You ready? 1-2-3.

[He puts the match to the gunpowder. Charlie screams.]

COMMERCIAL BREAK

[Hurley wakes up in a hotel room and sees that his clock and lamp don't work. He pulls open the curtain. He sees that an electrical outlet has burned.]

HURLEY: Oh, man.

[He's frantically packing, and on the phone.]

HURLEY: I need my car. 20 minutes? Look, I can't miss my flight. My mom's birthday is tomorrow.

[Hurley runs to the elevator which is full. He runs for the stairs. We see Charlie in the elevator.]

CHARLIE: Some of us have a bloody flight to make.

HURLEY [running through the hotel lobby]: Excuse me, coming through. Excuse me.

[Driving to the airport his car breaks down.]

HURLEY: No, no, no!

[He pulls off the road and starts running to the airport.]

HURLEY [running through the airport]: Excuse me, coming through, excuse me, excuse me. Look out, excuse me.

[He arrives at the check-in desk. The ticket agent starts checking him in.]

HURLEY: Any way we can hurry that up? My mom's birthday is tomorrow. Or, today -- I don't know. I don't really get the whole time change thing, but I've got to make that flight.

TICKET AGENT: I'm am going as fast as the system will allow me, dear. You're confirmed for seat 20G. However, the airline has a policy that a man of your size must purchase 2 tickets.

HURLEY: What? I didn't have to do that on the flight out here.

TICKET AGENT: Am I going to have to weigh you, dear?

HURLEY: Fine, whatever. I'll buy the one next to it.

TICKET AGENT: Alrighty. Here are 2 together.

HURLEY: Book it.

TICKET AGENT: Uh-oh.

HURLEY: Uh-oh, what uh-oh?

TICKET AGENT: It appears that your flight is already boarding in the Oceanic international terminal. Well, this is the domestic terminal. I don't think you're meant to make this flight, dear.

[Hurley runs through the airport, excusing himself along the way. He runs to the front of the security checkpoint line.]

HURLEY: Excuse me, sorry. Sorry, this is an emergency. I've got to cut through. Excuse me, dude. Dude?

SECURITY AGENT: Back of the line.

HURLEY: You've got to let me in. No, you don't understand...

SECURITY AGENT: Back of the line.

HURLEY: This is...

SECURITY AGENT: Back of the line.

[Hurley gives up and leaves. We see Arzt in line.]

SECURITY AGENT: Next.

ARZT [to the man in front of him]: Now? You're taking the computer out now?

[Hurley sees a guy on a motorized scooter.]

HURLEY: Hey, old guy? I'll give you 500 bucks to borrow your scooter.

OLD SCOOTER MAN: I just had a hip replacement. I need this thing.

HURLEY: Okay, 1600 bucks.

[We see Hurley on the scooter, excusing his way through the airport. He gets to the gate where the door is closing.]

HURLEY: Hey, hold it. Hold the door. Hold the door. Hold the door. I've got to get on this flight.

GATE AGENT: Sir, the jetway's closed.

HURLEY: Please, for the love of all that is good and holy in the world, let me on this plane.

GATE AGENT: Alright, one second. [She picks up the phone] Hunter, this is Jenna, we've got one more... ta. [to Hurley] This is your lucky day.

[Hurley gives gate agent a big hug.]

[We see Hurley walking in the jungle, at night.]

Hurley [whispering]: 15, 16, 23, 4-2, 4; 15, 16, 23, 4-2, 4; 15, 16, 23, 4-2, 4; 15, 16. . . [he takes a big breath where 8 would be].

KATE: You say something?

HURLEY: Nope.

KATE: I thought I heard 23.

HURLEY: Does that mean something to you?

KATE: What?

HURLEY: That number? 23?

KATE: The guy who called the Feds on me, back in Australia, did it for a 23000 dollar reward. Mean something to you?

HURLEY: Nah, it's just a number. We better catch up -- can barely see them.

[We see Jack and Locke walking along.]

LOCKE: We shouldn't be this close to each other, Jack.

JACK: If we blow up, we blow up. What the hell was all that about back there, John?

LOCKE: What was what about?

JACK: You asked me to let you go.

LOCKE: That's right.

JACK: That thing was taking you down the hole and you asked me to let you go.

LOCKE: It wasn't going to hurt me.

JACK: No, John, it was going to kill you.

LOCKE: I seriously doubt that.

JACK: Look, I need for you -- I need for you to explain to me what the hell's going on inside your head, John. I need to know why you believe that that thing wasn't going to...

LOCKE: I believe that I was being tested.

JACK: Tested?

LOCKE: Yeah, tested.

JACK: I think...

LOCKE: That's why you and I don't see eye-to-eye sometimes, Jack -- because you're a man of science.

JACK: Yeah, and what does that make you?

LOCKE: Me, well, I'm a man of faith. Do you really think all this is an accident -- that we, a group of strangers survived, many of us with just superficial injuries? Do you think we crashed on this place by coincidence -- especially, this place? We were brought here for a purpose, for a reason, all of us. Each one of us was brought here for a reason.

JACK: Brought here? And who brought us here, John?

LOCKE: The island. The island brought us here. This is no ordinary place, you've seen that, I know you have. But the island chose you, too, Jack. It's destiny.

JACK: Did you talk with Boone about destiny, John?

LOCKE: Boone was a sacrifice that the island demanded. What happened to him at that plane was a part of a chain of events that led us here -- that led us down a path -- that led you and me to this day, to right now.

JACK: And where does that path end, John?

LOCKE: The path ends at the hatch. The hatch, Jack -- all of it -- all of it happened so that we could open the hatch.

JACK: No, no, we're opening the hatch so that we can survive.

LOCKE: Survival is all relative, Jack.

JACK: I don't believe in destiny.

LOCKE: Yes, you do. You just don't know it yet.

[At the raft, Walt is sleeping, Sawyer is at the radar equipment.]

MICHAEL: I turned it on a little while ago.

SAWYER: Sayid said every hour.

MICHAEL: We're 15 miles out. We could be here for weeks. If that battery runs out...

SAWYER: The man said every hour.

[They switch the equipment on.]

SAWYER: Nothing.

MICHAEL: 5 minutes, no more.

SAWYER: Aye, aye. You know what I like about you, Mike? You've got the patience of a saint.

MICHAEL: Yeah? Why do you say that?

SAWYER: I've seen the way he talks to you -- the way he runs around, does whatever the hell he wants. I'd have showed him the back of my hand a long time ago.

MICHAEL: You would, huh?

SAWYER: A hell of a lot cheaper than a shrink.

MICHAEL: Is that what your father did to you? Show you the back of his hand?

SAWYER: My daddy never got a chance to beat me. He shot himself when I was 8.

MICHAEL: Is that why you want to die, man?

SAWYER: What?

MICHAEL: Since the day you told me you wanted on this raft, I couldn't figure it out. Why does a guy who only cares about himself want to risk his life to save everyone else? The way I see it, there's only 2 choices -- you're either a hero or you want to die.

SAWYER: Well, I ain't no hero, Mike.

[We hear a blip on the radar screen.]

SAWYER: Is that what I think it is?

MICHAEL: Something's out there.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

[Locke in his wheelchair at the gate.]

GATE AGENT: I'm sorry, sir, but the special wheelchair that we use for loading the disabled passengers -- well, no one seems to know where it is right now. Unless we find it I'm not sure we can get you on.

LOCKE: There's not another flight until tomorrow.

GATE AGENT: Yes, I'm aware of that, sir, but there's nothing I can...

JD: Look, I can get Michelle, we can carry him on. Would you mind if we carry you on?

LOCKE: No, that'll be fine.

[JD and Michelle carry Locke to his seat.]

MICHELLE: Here we go. Here's your seat.

JD: I'll get your bag, sir.

MICHELLE: If you need anything just press the call button.

LOCKE: Okay. Thank you.

[Locke pulls out what looks like the flight safety card from the seat back, and drops it. It's too far away for him to reach.]

[We see Locke, Jack, Kate, and Hurley arrive at the hatch.]

LOCKE: Hugo, take these extra sticks back a couple hundred yards.

HURLEY: Me? Oh, okay. Got it.

JACK [handing him his pack]: Be careful.

HURLEY: Can I have the flashlight? Because, uh, the torch with the dynamite thing, that's not making a whole lot of sense to me.

[Jack hands him the flashlight and takes the torch. Hurley exits.]

LOCKE: Kate, you run the fuse, Jack and I will rig the charges.

[In the distance we see the black smoke is coming from a fire on the beach. Sayid and Charlie approach the fire.]

CHARLIE: What the hell is that?

SAYID: There's no footprints, no tracks.

CHARLIE: This is it? This is the black smoke? Where are they?

SAYID: I don't know.

CHARLIE [hearing the baby cry]: She's here.

SAYID: Danielle!

CHARLIE: You come out, right now!

SAYID: Calm down. Danielle! I can hear you, come out. Please, he needs his mother.

[Danielle emerges from the bushes.]

DANIELLE: They were not here.

SAYID: Danielle, you have to give us the baby.

DANIELLE: I just wanted my Alex back. I thought if I gave them the baby...

SAYID: It's okay. I know. It's okay.

[Sayid takes the baby and gives it to Charlie.]

CHARLIE: I've got him. There never were any others. You started the fires yourself.

DANIELLE: No, I heard them whispering.

CHARLIE: You're a nut job. You heard nothing.

DANIELLE: I heard them say they were coming for the child. The others said they were coming for the boy.

CHARLIE: You're pathetic.

[We see Locke and Jack setting the charges.]

LOCKE: Wire. Hold that end. Now the fuse.

JACK: I'll do it.

[Jack pushes the fuse into the dynamite. They move away from the hatch toward Kate.]

KATE: This is as far as it goes.

LOCKE: It's far enough. I'll light it. You take cover, there'll be enough burn time for me to get clear.

JACK: Hurley!

HURLEY [off camera]: Wait just a sec.

KATE: So, what was that about back there?

JACK: What was what about?

KATE: Putting the dynamite in your pack.

JACK: I made a judgment call.

KATE: We drew straws.

JACK: Sorry, I'm not going to let drawing straws make decisions like that for us, Kate.

KATE: You had no right to make that choice...

JACK: Everybody wants me to be a leader until I make a decision that they don't like. You want to keep second guessing me, Kate? That's your call. There's something that you need to know -- if we survive this, if we survive tonight -- we're going to have a Locke problem. I have to know that you've got my back.

KATE: I've got your back.

LOCKE: Are we ready?

HURLEY: Wait a sec, wait a sec.

[Hurley drops his flashlight on the hatch and notices the numbers.]

HURLEY [running]: No. No, no, no. Stop! Stop, we can't do this. Stop. Wait. Stop we can't do this. Stop. Stop it. We can't. Stop. Don't light it. We can't do this. We can't do this. Stop. Wait. You've got to stop it.

[Locke lights the fuse.]

HURLEY: The numbers are bad. Stop. What are doing? Why did you do that?

[Hurley tries to stamp out the fuse.]

HURLEY: The numbers are bad. The numbers are bad.

JACK: Hurley! Hurley stop!

HURLEY: The numbers are bad.

JACK: Hurley! Hurley, you've got to get back.

[Jack tackles Hurley right before the dynamite detonates.]

[We see the blip on the radar screen. Walt wakes up.]

SAWYER: It's closer. It's closer. Give me the damn flare gun.

MICHAEL: Hold on a sec.

SAWYER: I'm telling you, it's closer. I'm telling you, look.

MICHAEL: I know, okay. I've got one flare.

JIN: [Speaks in Korean.]

MICHAEL [to Jin]: Okay, I know. You don't see anything. Okay.

SAWYER: What the hell are you expecting to see? In case you haven't noticed, it's dark.

WALT: What is it? Is it a ship?

MICHAEL: We don't know, little man. We don't know.

JIN: Starboard? Port?

MICHAEL: Port.

JIN: [Speaks in Korean.]

MICHAEL: Okay, what the hell am I supposed to do about it?

SAWYER: Hey, Han, you and Chewie want to slow down a second and talk to me here? We have to fire the flare.

MICHAEL: We don't know what it is. It could be anything -- a piece of floating junk. We don't even know if Sayid's radar works.

SAWYER: Have you ever known that guy to fix something up that don't work?

WALT: It's moving away.

SAWYER: Floating junk that knows how to steer, huh?

MICHAEL: We're moving. It doesn't make...

SAWYER: Look, are you going to give me the damn gun, or am I going to have to take it?

MICHAEL: What are you going to do? Shoot me?

WALT: It's almost gone. C'mon.

MICHAEL: Please, god.

[Michael fires the flare. Jin lowers the sail.]

WALT: It's coming back. It's coming back.

[They all laugh and whoop. Jin shushes them. We hear a boat motor sound approaching. A floodlight turns on. The raft folks are excited. The boat kills it's motor.]

MICHAEL: Are we glad to see you!

BEARDED MAN: What's going on? What are you folks doing this far out here?

MICHAEL: We were, we were -- the plane crashed. We were on the island for months, man.

BEARDED MAN: Plane crash, huh? How about that?

MICHAEL: We were on an island -- oh, flight 815 -- hey, where are we?

BEARDED MAN: Well, it's a good thing we found you.

MICHAEL: Yeah, yeah, we survived and there's a whole group of people on the...

BEARDED MAN: Well, ain't that something?

MICHAEL: Yeah!

BEARDED MAN: Only, the thing is, we're going to have to take your boy.

MICHAEL: What? What'd you say?

BEARDED MAN: The boy, we're going to have to take him.

MICHAEL: Hey, what the hell's going on here? Who are you people?

BEARDED MAN: Just give us the boy.

[Two other men on the boat stand up.]

MICHAEL: I'm not giving you anybody.

BEARDED MAN: Well, alright then.

[The floodlight is turned off. Sawyer draws his gun, but is shot first by one of the two men, and falls into the water. Jin dives in after him. The two men jump onto the raft. One grabs Walt and the other fights with Michael.]

WALT: Dad! Dad!

MICHAEL: No!

[Michael gets pushed into the water. Walt is taken onto the boat screaming. A women throws a Molotov cocktail from the steering compartment and the boat takes off. Michael dives under the water before the raft goes up in flames.]

WALT: Help me!

MICHAEL: Walt!

WALT: Help me! Dad! Please!

MICHAEL: Walt! Walt! Walt!

COMMERCIAL BREAK

[We see Claire at the caves. Charlie and Sayid enter with Aaron. Claire runs over. Sayid goes to the spring, Shannon runs to him. Charlie has a Mary statue in his pack.]

[Shot of people boarding, or on, the plane: Claire, Kate, Sawyer, Locke, Jack, Charlie, Sayid, Sun/Jin (with the watch), Michael/Walt, Shannon/Boone, Hurley (who gives Walt a thumbs-up, and then reads the comic book), Arzt helps Claire with her luggage.]

[Back at the hatch. They uncover it to reveal a long narrow passageway with a broken ladder going down.]
