As pics reveal, though, this wasn't to be their first appearance in the episode, and the scene that was cut would also have served nicely as a harbinger of things to come. What things you say? Since this is spoilerly, you'll have to take the jump to continue this conversation:

The rumor on the street is that Paolo and Nikki will be the new leaders of the beach people after an attempt to recue Jack, Kate, and Sawyer fails (with some dire conseqeunces.) As we DID see in Further Instructions, Nikki has a bit of a quick mouth. Originally, there was a little more poison behind that quickness.
The original scene called for Claire to come upon Paolo and Nikki fooling around in Jack's tent. Claire insists they leave which Paolo is pretty passive about, but Nikki is down-right confrontational over. Why should they leave? Jack isn't even there, and if he was, who made him the king of the beach?
There was also some more smooching between Claire and Charlie, which would have been a bit too much sugar for me, so I'm glad they cut it.
In other news, what became of the commune people and John Locke? Well, from the pictures below it looks like John kept on hiking through the woods and didn't get caught up in the big bust that followed.
