Question: Was the Island moved 15 years ago?

Ben tells Hurley that the crackers in the box near the Orchid are 15 years old.
At the time he said it, it was the end of 2004. 1989-1990 would be the last time the Island moved.
We haven't seen children younger than 15 years old on the Island.
(Note: Both Hurley and Sawyer ate the crackers, and both thought they were fine.)
Also, this leads me to believe Ben was there when the crackers were put in the box.

Miles claims Charles has been looking for the Island for 20 years (1984/1985), so that makes me think he didn't turn the wheel. Another thing that possibly happened in 1984 is a "shut down" according to the blast door map.
http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii181/CarriesLost/Blast%20Door/ShutDownDate.jpg

Horace tells John in his dream that he has been dead for 12 years, again at the end of 2004. So the purge happened in 1992.

If these dates are correct:

1984 - Charles starts looking for Island/Suspected shut down
1988 - Alex is born
1989 - Island Moves
1992 - Purge

Why would the Island move in 1989?
I feel like I'm missing something in all of this.

i like the timeline so far. there's another island timeline thread around here somewhere, i'll hunt it.

i'm not sure i understand why you made the mental leap that the crackers were there for 15 years so the wheel had to have been turned 15 years ago.

if widmore has been looking for the island for 20 years, it makes more sense to tie the island moving to him having lost it than to a box of crackers.

so if the island doesnt' move 15 years ago, the box of crackers might be one of those Island Time Symbiosis examples. what happened 15 years ago to make ben put the crackers there?

Well, it's thought, ok mental leap...

I just figured that box was left there for a reason. What reason? It could be the place they go before they turn the wheel. They stop there and make contact with the hostiles before they go. The last person that went, left their crackers. That's how I leaped, leapt, lept ... gah jumped to that conclusion.

It is totally just a question - yes, I'm trying to figure out about "15 years" ago.

Here's the link I used for the blast door map .. there's a bunch of maps out there and they are pretty big, I'd have to post it in pieces in order for it to be readable.

Heres what Im thinking.

Since the purg seems to have happened in 92, and the crackers have been there since 89, Dharma was still there. So Im thinking it was just something simple, like it was some others job to sit and watch the Orchid and warn of someone coming and the crackers were merely a work time snack for the shift. Like say if the Others were planning an attack, or a possible sabatage on the Orchid, one Other would stay behind and warn them if someone was coming, and since Ben knew exactly where that box was, and how to flip the mirror to communicate, and since he was playing both sides at the time (Dharma and Others), Im going to say it was Bens job.
Or maybe the producers just wanted to say, "here, Look! We're feeding Hurley, we're not letting him starve on the field trip!"

Wicked, I just posted a bit of a messy timeline in the Jughead thread. It's speculation at the moment but it seems like it's the most likely scenario of what happened since the earlierst point we have seen so far on the island, in Jughead.

We could do with making a huge thread in here, with everything that has happened so far. If we have all the events in a big list, then we might start seeing connections that we missed.

So Ben just knew that box was sitting there for 15 years? And no one was ever at that site from 1989 to 1992? What was with the mirror and binoculars and Ben contacting the hostiles from that site, if it was just a place for a Dharma person to sit and watch the Orchid? The box was even hidden under a rock. I just think it's more than that.

ok.

I'm confused now.

I thought that Ben went to the box to signal his people who were either at or on their way to the Temple. I figured he was telling them that he was going to the Orchid.

Me too Viva. That's what I thought and still think.

So Ben just knew that box was sitting there for 15 years?.
Yes.
And no one was ever at that site from 1989 to 1992? .
Im sure they were, but maybe they brought there own lunch, maybe they didn't feel like crackers, maybe the Others were busy conducting hostile take overs of the other stations during that time.
What was with the mirror and binoculars and Ben contacting the hostiles from that site, if it was just a place for a Dharma person to sit and watch the Orchid? The box was even hidden under a rock. I just think it's more than that.

I said I thought it was a place for an Other to sit and watch the Orchid, not Dharma. I used Ben in the example because he was an Other at that time, but he was also still working for Dharma. So it wouldn't look too odd to see Ben the Jr. Janitor sitting by the roadside near the Orchid.
Being hidden under a rock is what led me to believe it was the Others. Im sure they wouldn't leave that out in the open so that Dharma could see they were spying.

But sometimes a box of crackers is just that. A box of Crackers.

hahahaha - yes I realize sometimes a box of crackers are sometimes just a box of crackers.

However this was a 15 year old box of crackers in a hidden box that Ben knew about. Hurley and Sawyer tasted the crackers and both thought they were fine. I'm just thinking that after the wheel was turned (15 years ago), there was a bunch of skips and 15 years ago might have been sped up a bit.

Do you at least see where my thinking is with this? I would feel differently if Hurley ate the crackers and then when Sawyer tried them he said - Son of a ***** Hugo, these are stale. So it's not just that the crackers are there from 15 years ago, it's that the crackers are there and still good enough to eat.

I hope I explained that well enough.. I'm so confused.

I think I get what you are saying. But it has been a confusing couple of weeks for us all and our brains are starting to skip like that dern island.

I had an idea about Ben or Sawyer hiding the box while time traveling...but then I thought and this sounds better:

What if the Others/Hostiles have hidden various boxes with crackers and binoculars around the island? They could have used it to communicate before the purge when they didn't have access to DHARMA technology. And they could have some special spots, like patrolling, so if an other needed to warn the rest of the Others he would go find a box and communicate with the other(s) in the spot. And on "There's no place like home" Ben could have just told Richard to go to one of those spots so that they could communicate.

Not saying that this was their main communication system. It couldn't be used at night, and it's weird... I think it could be more like for emergencies, thus the crackers. Something like an emergency/survival kit.

Or...

Like my first idea, Ben could have brought the crackers from the present and put them on the box, not 15 years before but only months or weeks (or days). Or it could have been Sawyer...hmmmm...

My first impression of that scene was that Ben had forgotten that the box was hidden under the rock and suddenly remembered it was there. Anyone else think that Ben had that "oh yeah, I almost forgot that was here" expression?

hahahaha - I can't believe I started a thread about a box of 15 year old crackers!!!

::Rolls around on the floor giggling::

I'm going through these old threads looking for anything relevant to Season 6 LOST - this one made me crack up! I love you all for not calling me crazy to my face (computer face).

Sometimes a box of crackers is a box of crackers!
