What the.....? Don't know about anybody else, but this is driving me nuts!! They just introduced two new characters last night, and we're (the audience) given nothing on them? No info. Nikki and Paulo are "known" to the losties, but not to us. I didn't like that. And didn't I read somewhere, that those two were going thru Jack's tent? Right before Locke gives his speech? Why??
And is it me, or does Paulo look alot like one of the dudes monitoring electromagnetic anomalies in the Arctic, at the end of season 2? The one who calls Penny W. I know it's not the same actor, but.......who knows?

Alright Cid here you go. I didn't mind the way they introduced the characters so much. We knew they were coming. I thought it was a subtle introduction just to get them in to the story. People that are not rabid fans like us were probably saying"who the heck is that"? Maybe since we already knew they were coming we wanted a grand entrance (for the record I don't include myself in we). But I remember saying out loud "there they are". And so it begins. Lost Mach 3...

I'll post the same thing i posted in another thread about this topic.
As for those new characters being thrown in at the end, it kinda made me laugh, and I wasn't all that crazy about how they did it either, but really, lets be honest, did they really have much of a choice to do it any other way?? How else are they supposed to bring in new characters to an island that "not even God can see" at this point? I think we would have been more put off if they suddenly crashed on the island. That to me would have been more cliche than the way the decided to do it. Just my two cents.

We've known there were other Losties, most of them assigned to the menial task of gathering fire wood and filling in the scene when they have a funeral. I think what might have been more agreeable perhaps is if they had introduced them earlier in the show with a just a quick bit to introduce them.
All these other survivors have basically been background scenery, with little obvious interaction with the main cast, virtually no responsibility, no input in what goes on, and seemingly little interest in getting off the island or maintaining safety from The Others or anything.
Now all of a sudden we need to bring two of them into the story line? The pay-off better be worth it.

First of all, let me say thanks to both of you for posting on this thread. And secondly, I hear both of you. How else could TPTB introduce these characters that the rabid fans already knew about.
I'm just saying, that I wish we got alittle bit of a back story on them (hopefully, this is forthcoming). Not just a "hey nikki and paulo" in the dialog. Ya gotta give me a little more than that!! Still, a great episode. :D

btw, for characters that were hyped up for their hotness, I wasn't all that impressed. Maybe it was just me though.

I think the lesson to be learned (Boone, Shannon, Ana Lucia, Libby, etc) is that your time on the island can be as short as the writers want it to be, so get it while you can. Hey, with any luck, she'll get a supporting role on the next new crappy comedy on Fox.

it would have been easy to introduce the characters early enough, by means of tasking (fire, hut building, whatever) or the log update. IF tptb could ensure actor availability. if the story line is not predetermined, it would have been nearly impossible for the actors to get a s1 intro (however cameo small) with a guarantee for availability at whatever time the script called for them. just look what happened with the penny pic....fans jumped all over that when the part turned out to be played by different actresses.
that's not to say that they couldn't have done a better job at introducing them now. the dialog came off as b-movie to me. the placement seemed awkward and obvious. the show has been sneakysneaky subtle in the past...integration could have been a little more smoothe.
(sorry, cid, i'd have jumped all over this topic earlier for you, but i've been consumed by The Yuck)
The Magician

By introducing them earlier in the show, what I meant (and should have said) was earlier in the episode. What often happens with the middle-tier actors on a show is they get wooed away to star in their own show which ultimately fails, and then they agree to come back to the vehicle which gave them near-stardom in the first place, in the role of their evil twin.
And why do we have to have two young and (reasonably) attractive people? why not Frogurt, or Rose and Bernie (who by the way seem to have disappeared?)? Just pandering to the 18-34 MTV demographic I guess.

OMG...so sorry to hear about your Yuck. That sucks...big time. :( But, your right, it would've been hard to introduce them earlier (i.e. season 1). But you nailed it....why I didn't like it. It was b-movie like when Nikki and Paulo were introduced into the show. And it could've of been either sneakysneaky or funny, like the Scott/Steve thing.
Or, (here we go again), it could've been done that way on purpose....and we'll just have to wait untill it plays out. Didn't I read somewhere that Nikki and Paulo are found going thru Jack's tent? Or was that a foiler, not a spoiler?

ideally (and this would have corrected many of the show's problems imo) if the group had gathered toward the beginning of hte show this epi or an earlier one and said "hey, all our leader are gone and the hatch has gone kerflewy we might wanna get organised. let's start by arranging a search party for survivors of the kerflewy...who wants to help..."
the writers could have (1) introduced the new characters within a deeper context of script and (2) shown that the remaining losties had some kind ANY kind of reaction to the events on the island. their complete flat affect with regard to island happenings is mildly disturbing to me.

I think this was something the writers thought would be a nice thing to keep people asking questions until next week. "Lets introduce these next characters at the end of the episode and then cut it off. That'll keep em talking" The only thing is, I had already read articles that told me these people would be on the show, so I am not really surprised that they were brought in, and I will wait until more episodes to see if they actually give them speaking parts and if they are even going to be important to the storyline.

I have always wondered why these people are so self centered. A huge explosion and no one looks for the dead. No one runs to see what happened.

Such a bad introduction. They couldn't have made it any more awkward if they'd tried. It's not the introduction of characters who have supposedly been there all along that has me down on this scene. It's the delivery and the complete lack of subtlety. It was about as close as you can get to the writers actually saying "Here's two new characters. We couldn't figure out how to write them in smoothly so whatever, here they are. Got it? Good. Let's all just move on now."

I have to agree, the introduction of those two was lame.
Fluffy, the fact that the losties don't gossip or clammer around people returning to camp is puzzling. When I saw Desmond throwing the rocks with just a shirt on I wondered why no one was addressing him in any manner! No "are you okay?", no "where are your pants, Des?", no "you don't look so good. What's up?" Could anyone else see him?
I also agree with you Magician. There are so many beautiful people on this island. I've never been on a plane that had so many GQ and Victoria's Secret model types. Give us some regular people! Ha!

I think they were trying to come off like they have been here all along--no need for anything special. It did lack excitement, to say the least, but I am taking what they give and keeping the faith that in the grand sceme of LOST, this will all fit right in.

I think this has already been stated on the thread, but I'll say it again. I think it only comes as a disappointment to people like us who knew it was coming and had expectations of the "tent scene".
I was speaking to people today who are watchers of the show, but not to the "level" I do, and the said, "Finally, they actually let the background characters speak!! Its about time!!" So really, it didn't seem odd, forced or out of place for them. I think the producers and writers understand that they can't please us all the time, but like I said, how else were they going to bring in new people after 60 days on the island??

ok.....the acting is lacking
the integration of the regular joe into stereotype lostie land was weak. they were just thrust in there as if they had been involved and there all along.
but considering the writers waited 3 seasons to integrate these kinds of characters, i don't know how many options they had to do so.
it's about time ordinary people with ordinary voices spoke up. i wish they were better actors having been given a better segue....but i'll take it. it's about time people starting talking to one another and asking the obvious questions. it is annoying, but it is real and in incorporating the Real, the writers are addressing many viewer complaints.

My gripe isn't so much with the writing (as noted, it's tough to introduce new characters at this point), nor am I impugning the acting ability of our two newbies, just their plasticity. The introduction of these two, along with the killing off of Eko, helps kill the much-vaunted diversity of the LOST cast, and may lose audience members as well. I, for one, preferred a variety of ages and ethnicities in the cast, and this season has so far done nothing to further that, and a lot to demolish it. With Ben being played as 40 (although Michael Emerson is 50+), that leaves Locke as the only "old guy." Rose and Bernard have been MIA this season (with reason). It makes the group less interesting.

I guess I would have preferred a conversation between Locke and Syaid along the lines of "We should include THING 1 and THING 2. They are young and capable YADDA YADDA YADDA..."
Instead you have THING 2 say to THING 1 "You always complain we're not part of the action..." or whatever. It's like the writers are trying very hard to make the characters prove their importance.
I couldn't stand the whole Pearl "But there's six TV's! See, look how important I, as a woman can be, while THING 1 is a dumb male comic relief. We're just like every network sitcom!" scene.

Sorry I'm not up to speed on this, but what reason?
I think it's safe to say the show is trying to appeal to that much-moneyed 18-34 demographic by bringing in the pilates instructors. Won't be long before they've got Hurley out on the beach at sunrise huffing and puffing his way through a downward facing dog.
I think the show has way too many threads running and tptb just can't keep a cohesive story line running that doesn't end up looking like a first-time attempt at a macrame jump suit. And the only way to bring it all together will be via flashbacks to fill in the holes.

Though I can agree that there introduction could have been A LOT better. I would like to think that perhaps they are "others" who were killed the actual Nikki and Paulo. And as we know thus far, the standing order for Others who sneak into the camp is to "not get involved" as Ben stated in 3x01. Perhaps they have been there but staying out of the way because that's what they were ordered to do.
Just a thought.

Front section had the passenger list, that's how they found Ethan out. In order for your theory to work, Ben would have had to order to people off camera to follow Ethan, find two passengers to assume the identities of and become them.
It would also be very strange that they feel left out of the leadership group dynamic.
*sorry, late again...

Indeed I was suggesting that they killed the real Nikki and Paulo. And remember it was a few episodes in before Hurley checked the manifest against everyone, so the "Others" having not heard anything from Ethan perhaps, could have sent 2 additional Others to follow-up and observe. Hell, maybe the real Nikki and Paulo didn't even survive the crash. So they assumed the identities of 2 dead people. (maybe they checked the manifest 1st).
And I could see them not telling Ethan about this, since he wasn't following orders anyway. He was supposed to make a list, not get involved then get back to Ben. Instead, he was helping them out (gathering wood etc..) , stalking Claire at night with the shots and such. And in general interacting with the Losties.
Maybe this is pretty far fetched but it's just an idea.

I just can't see two others sitting around complaining about not being part of the Lostie inner circle.
Although it's a cool concept, unfortunately, I think THING 1 and THING 2 are just 2 lame characters, without any secrets or plot twists, that we are just going to have to deal with.

I agree Poop. Nikki was all excited about getting to go to the prom in the limo with the cool kids.

Poopaphone, I know you are probably right, I just want to believe that there is something cool about them that justifies their lame existence :)
Anyone else got any theories on where they will take these characters?

On the bright side, their characters can't get any worse than they are right now.

It would be great if THING 2 was a stripper in the real world. That would at least be interesting...

This is what I'm hoping for. I would imagine that they would at least try to make us like these characters, seeing as how Lost is a character driven show. I'm still doing my best to remain open minded about these 2...it sure is hard.

I know. You gotta wonder if the director said "Nikki baby, you need to ... you know... what do I wanna say here.... you wanna like.... bounce into the scene a little. Stay on the balls of your feet maybe. And then come to a sudden stop. And bounce a little more. Okay, let's take it again."

While I was watching the scene on ABC.com I had to go through that bouncing part to get to Ekos last words (for research purposes you know). I must have watched it 20 times. She definitely doesn't come to a stop abruptly. She sort of winds the bouncing down from 50 rpms to 20 to 0.

The show has way too many threads running (wait - did someone just say that?) and this "mini-season" is supposed to fill us in on the Others, and Rose and Bernard aren't in the story lines, therefore they're absent. Perhaps they were transmogrified as a result of the hatch implosion and have reappeared as...Nick and Jessica.
That's Pilates with a capital "P.":p And we don't need a yoga class on the beach...or Hurley in Spandex, or upside-down, or upside-down in Spandex, for that matter.
And don't you think the show already has plenty of appeal to the 18-34 crowd? Just look at the composition of this forum.

Hey! Who would be Batman?
And I actually wouldn't soil the name of the Wonder Twins by comparing them to Nikki and Paulo.

Maybe it's just me, but Nikki and Paulo weren't so bad in last night's episode. Nikki asked good questions in a non-annoying voice, and Paulo just stood there looking concerned. Maybe things are looking up for them?
