THE VARIABLE

EPISODE 5.14

Most of us who watched last week’s “clip-show” liked it more than we thought we would.  Although, most of us believed in Santa at one time in our lives, as well.  Watching the same previews for the 100th episode over and over again for two weeks has made me a bit cranky.  Shhh, it’s on…

Desmond is being rushed down the halls of an hospital with a terrified Penny at the bumper of the stretcher.  Baby Charlie is with her in the waiting room when creepy Ms. Hawking shows up to babble.

Thirty years earlier…Daniel Faraday is back on the island with his time travelling island buddies.  Faraday and Miles pounds Jack awake and wants info from Jack about his trip back to the island.  Daniel reveals some disturbing news about his lovely mother.

Something tells me Ms. Hawking is gonna have a big night.

SOME LIKE IT HOTH
Episode 5.13

Ice planets, Yoda, light-sabers, Carbonite statues: If any of these elements are included in tonight’s episode, I shall declare this night the greatest Wednesday night ever. Shhhhh…it’s on!

The microwave says 3:16. Finding a good, premonition-free apartment is proving interesting for a young Miles and his mother. Tonight’s opener shows us a young boy communing with the dead to the point of tantrum. Flashing to the present, Miles is working with Sawyer to hide the transfer of the wounded baby-Ben into the questionable hands of the Others.

Horace sends Miles on an important “I trust you mission” into Others’ territory. There’s a body-removal that needs to happen. Miles is gonna be a hearse driver to a bullet-ridden Dharma dude that actually turns out to be the victim of extreme magnetic dentistry.

Before departing with the departed, Miles asks the Dharma-corpse, “what really happened?”

The answer is pending.

DEAD IS DEAD
Episode 5.12

It’s been a lot to digest—this season. For eleven weeks, we’ve been given the answers to many of the deepest questions which have arisen over the last four years. This week’s title has got to be a bit deceiving—it reminds me of a Zane Grey novel that was never published. Shhhhh…it’s on!

Charles Widmore is a very, very cool dude in the 1970s. So cool, in fact, Ben wants to run away from happy Dharma camp and become “one of you.” In my mind, I know that Charles’ favorite band is The Beatles, his favorite color is fluorescent pink and he looks too much like Russell Crowe to be healthy and sane.

“Welcome back to the land of the living,” Locke tells a grown-up Ben, fresh from a healing sleep. Ben is recoiling in the presence of his most recent murder-victim. Eventually, he tells John, “to believe is one thing”…but to see it happen.

“My God.”

If I were Ben, looking at a living and breathing John Locke two feet from my face, I probably would have said, “Oh, God.”

WHAT HAPPENED, HAPPENED
Episode 5.11

My week has been spent trying to reconcile Sawyer’s lack of stones. I’ve concluded he may have to kill ten hardy-men and one hell-bent Smoke Monster tonight to grow them back. Shhh! It’s on…

Jin is fresh from getting knocked on his ass by Sayid…a wounded baby Ben in front of him. Horace tries to rally the troops to find the fleeing Iraqi. Roger Linus makes yum-yum eyes Kate until Jin pulls into camp with bloody little Ben and Roger pulls his attention appropriately away from Freckles.

Next, we’re back in the real world with Kate unloading Aaron from the car. Kate is running errands like all busy moms do. She’s not working from a list like most single moms might do.

Sawyer sent her on this very special errand—and then jumped out of a helicopter.
