A lot of fans were not thrilled at all by the jarring introduction of Nikki and Paolo.  In reality, it was no worse than the equally jarring introduction of Arzt in season one, so I'm over it,  but still it did seem odd for these characters to be in such close proximity and so seemingly well known by everyone, all of a sudden.  Surreal, for sure.

As pics reveal, though, this wasn't to be their first appearance in the episode, and the scene that was cut would also have served nicely as a harbinger of things to come.  What things you say?  Since this is spoilerly,  you'll have to take the jump to continue this conversation:

It has been confirmed that Sky One will be showing the LOST Season 3 premier and second episode on Sunday November 19 at 10pm in the UK! The episodes will then be shown every Sunday at 10pm for another four weeks until the hiatus.

After the hiatus is over, the episodes will be broadcast within one week of the original ABC broadcast in the U.S.A.

Once again, thank you to Bladerunna on the forums for this information!

Following this past Wednesday's Lost Episode (Further Instructions), there's been a lot of discussion about Locke's rekindled purpose and his sketchy past.  There's plenty of material to discuss, do not get me wrong.  The Locke of Season One has made a comeback.  That guy whose faith in the island that gave him back the use of his legs, is back.  He even said so.  He lost faith in the island, but not anymore (paraphrased, of course).

But I'm here to bring up another revelation:  We met new Losties!

Following the confirmation that the rights to Lost have been bought from Channel 4 by Sky in the UK, is the exciting announcement that the show's third season will start broadcasting in November, less than one month from now. The official date of the premier is unknown at the moment, however this is a welcome revelation for all the British Lost fans.

The date of broadcast will be posted as soon as it's announced, so keep checking back.

And thanks to Bladerunna on the forums for digging up the dirt on this one!

It was confirmed today that, in the UK, Sky One will be the new site for Lost. The channel, which is the most popular sattelite and cable broadcaster in the United Kingdom, outbid Channel Four, and other networks, such as Five during the re-negotiations between Channel Four and Buena Vista International.

The show has been broadcast on Channel Four since the summer of 2004, and it has come as a shock that it is now moving over to the Sky network. Spokespeople from the network are understood to be 'very excited' about the move.

The show had suffered dwindling ratings on Channel Four during season two. During Season One, Lost advertisements, spin offs and documentaries were hardly off the air, whilst during Season Two, these were sparse, with hardly and advertisements being shown at all.

Hopes are high for Sky One advertising campaign. Surely with a new show, they'll work hard to promote it. And, with the Sky networks usual high standard, things are looking good for Lost ratings when Season 3 begins in the spring of next year.

Gotta hand it to ABC marketing,  they sure know how to blow a surprise.  The promos for this weeks LOST, "Further Instructions", pretty much summed up the entire episode.  Now, spoiler savvy LOST fans can read between the lines of this little gem and know the answer to one of the promised reveals this season.

We begin with Locke laying prone in the jungle,  he sees a naked Desmond run by, tries to hail him, but the words will not come out, he is mute.  He looks up and Eko’s stick falls the canopy.  At this point, if you're like me, you're wondering where they are in relation to the Swan Station and just what the hell happened to it.  But in typical LOST fashion,  you're not going to find out… not yet anyways.

Tonight is the half-way mark in the mini-season, and perhaps one of the most anticipated episodes of the whole thing as we finally find out the fate of Desmond, Locke, and Eko!  We have preivews, clips, and more after the jump.  BEWARE of spoilers.

The final numbers from Wednesday show LOST losing in the 9pm face-off with power contender Criminal Minds in the demo share, but winning with a tenuous 200,000 more viewers.  Naturally the news has LOST fans shaking in their boots.  Don't worry about it.  LOST historically comes in behind crime drama, but hasn't had such a competitor in its time slot until now.  Remember that Damon Lindelof actually foreshadowed this in the past weeks Podcast at lost.abc.com.  Lost's viewership is still a strong 17+ Million and the good news is the drop off from premiere to second episode was much smaller than year.  Following the reveal of what-was-in-the-hatch, a record five million viewers tuned out and pretty much stayed out for the remainder of the season.

Lost_logo_and_cast.jpg
Aside from the success of LOST in the ratings, the show has proven a powerful marketing brand as well spawning a line of successful tie-in books, posters, puzzles, and other memorabilia.  In addition,  LOST being on the sci-fi/fantasy side of the spectrum makes it a likely asset for big screen success.

In addition, the summers "LOST Experience" game proved to be a successful piece of advertiser bait for ABC, if not a little underwhelming for the participants.

The bottom line is,  LOST's numbers still put it in the phenomenally successful bracket for the type of show it is, but it is no surprise that the juggernaut of TV ratings, the crime drama, might start to overcome it.  I'm sure if CSI were put up against LOST,  LOST would come up short consistently.

On the speculative side, one could look at the ratings as a sort of popularity contest amongst the characters.  So far,  we have revisited small groups in equal time.  First Jack, Kate, and Sawyer; then with Glass Ballerina Sun, Jin, and Sayid;  with next weeks 'Further Instructions' we catch up with Hurley, Desmond, Locke, Eko, and Charlie.  Who knows, if the numbers come up maybe we could see a bit more of Mr. Locke this season.

Progress Report:  The Glass Ballerina

Synopsis:  Episode deals with issues of honesty and deceptions.  Sayid tricks, or so he thinks, Sun and Jin into assisting with an rescue effort after he realizes Jack, Sawyer, Kate, and Hurley have been captured. Ben becomes aware of the boat and sends a new character Colleen to seize it.  Kate and Sawyer are forced to work at a dig site, and Ben reveals some very interesting information to Jack.

Flashback:  The flashback is of Sun and deals with her deceptive nature.
Revealed:

  1. Sun was having an affair with Jae Lee and was considering leaving Jin for him.
  2. Sun’s father knew about this.
  3. Jin was ordered to kill Jae Lee.
  4. Jin decided to let him go, but Jae Lee was killed anyways.
  5. More evidence of a Juliet/Ben relationship by Ben’s comments that she never made ‘him’ soup.
  6. Evidence of a possible love Square with Ben, Juliet, Colleen, and Danny (Pickett).
  7. The dig site was likely an archeological dig.  The area was broken up into quadrants and the others were frequently checking a map of some sort.
  8. The others were able to approach the sailboat without getting wet and without walking up the pier.
  9. Alex (Danielle’s daughter) is connected somehow to Carl from the premiere.
  10. Sawyer has inventoried the guards and their fighting capabilities and is plotting an escape attempt.
  11. Ben’s last name is Linus, and he claims to have lived on the island his entire life.
  12. Ben claims the others are on the island by choice and can leave anytime.
  13. Ben proves they have contact with the outside world by playing Jack part of a baseball game.
  14. Ben claims he will take Jack home if he cooperates.
  15. When Colleen approaches Danny about getting Desmond's boat,  she can be heard saying "Ben wants us to take the galaga..."  Do the others have a submarine?

New Characters:

Colleen:  A feisty blonde who may have the hots for Ben and maybe jealous of Juliet.   She was shot by Sun when she attempted to steal the boat.

This press release circulated last week:

http://www.abcmedianet.com/ams/assets/both/2006/010/03/100206_11.html

We know everyone is getting hyped up for tonight's episode and many of you might be expecting a different episode than the one that airs tonight.   So we thought we'd pass on the news, just in case.

This week's episode is titled "The Glass Balerina".  "Further Instructions", the episode originally schedule to air this week, will air next week.  They basically flip flopped two episodes.  Apparently, it won't affect any timelines, etc.

So, enjoy "The Glass Ballerina" tonight!  And as always, hit up the comments, check out the forums and theorize to your heart's content after tonight's show.  We'll be here!

Shrinking ratings, kvetching cast members, acrid lashings from the press, is 'LOST' finally escaping the 'Golden Show' halo it has worn for two years now?  Proof that the press has grown weary of mindlessly supporting the show can be seen in the four corners of the world in the wake of the season three premiere with everything from subtle jabs over the ailing numbers to prognostications of doom over LOST losing it's Wednesday 9:00 crown to 'Criminal Minds'.  I say, who cares.

dominic_monaghan.jpg
It's never been about LOST being the best over-all; it's about LOST being LOST, that is all that matters to me.  I couldn't care less if the show is number one in Nielsen ratings or not.  Ultimately, the ratings are only estimates any way, drawn from a select group of viewers.  And we here in the USA, of all places, should know how accurate 'exit polls' are these days.

And the stories of the dissatisfied cast,  with Dom coming out about how dissatisfied he is in working with the cast;  isn't that really just Dom expressing some 'professional' despair over screentime?

Tv.com went as far as to suggest that if the numbers "trended" as they did last year, starting with 4 million fewer viewers, that the show could be in danger of cancellation.

It's sad that with all this negative media sooth-saying, the press has ignored the fact that the season premiere brought some of the best critical acclaim to the show since it's pilot touched ground two years ago.    Add that to the fact that JJ Abrams has indicated that they will be departing from the "shoot-from-the-hip" writing of Season Two and move more towards an overarcing plan.  That is the kind of work that will bring those viewers back.

But even if they don't, it won't matter.  LOST has always been the best show on television to its fans, but never the #1 over all show in ratings or even its time-slot consistently, so should we worry that things are just as they always have been?  Nah.
